Ecology Consultancy Ltd (ECL) is one of the UK’s foremost private ecology consultancies. The company’s broad client base included local authorities, property developers and among others, companies in the utilities and renewable energy sectors.

Having built ECL from the ground up, the managing director, John Newton, was looking for a larger organisation to acquire the business and to help take it to the next level. He approached Avondale to assist him in his goal after the firm’s services were recommended to him by his business coach and by his accountants, Chantrey Vellacott DFK.

Avondale conducted in-depth market research, carefully identifying potential acquirers for ECL, which it then discreetly approached. Bids were submitted from three prospective buyers, each of which presented a different deal structure. Having three strong offers on the table, ECL was in a strong position with regard to subsequent negotiations, and Avondale was able to benchmark the company’s sale price according to Mr Newton’s terms.

The chosen buyer was Temple Group, a leading environmental, planning and sustainability consultancy. With the Heads of Terms agreed, the process smoothly transitioned to a successful sale. Mr Newton was able to move on to new challenges, assured that ECL is in excellent hands and well placed for further growth.

Avondale provided attentive and friendly support. Their M&A expert was a pleasure to have at my side through the sale of my business. They were highly friendly and professional throughout the course of the sale. Avondale provided considerable time and support in helping me understand what I needed to do. They handled dealing with the chosen buyer extremely well and achieved a good result for me. I would recommend anyone seeking an exit to talk to them.
